A Me-ist to a We-ist: How We Can Change the World One Person at a Time

Chapter Two

Be kind to the planet

Our Earth is populated with roughly 7.4 billion people as of August 2016, according to Wikipedia.com (World Population, https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population). By the year 2100, a United Nations report estimates that number will grow substantially to around 11.2 billion. The sheer numbers of our species will put even more stress upon our world’s environment, energy resources, and food supplies. While our future may appear bleak, there is also a source of hope when we change our attitude about being a Me-ist to become a We-ist. This can be a great moment in history as H.H. The Dalai Lama writes about our present circumstance, “This crisis in bringing us an opportunity to experience what few generations in history ever have the privilege of knowing: a generational mission; the exhilaration of a compelling moral purpose; a shared and unifying cause…to put aside pettiness and conflict…and the opportunity to rise” (George, 2009). Being kind to our planet is not just buying fuel efficient automobiles and riding bicycles; turning down our home’s nightly temperature and changing to more efficient light bulbs; or recycling and buying less manufactured goods. Author James George (2009) nicely sums up our present situation, “The real bottom line, then, is to see that we are in a spiritual crisis that is widely misperceived as an environmental or an economic or a social crisis.

Earth Mother is screaming for our help to help ourselves: we can invent all sorts of new electronic gadgets; create unlimited social sites to consume our time; and design countless video games to distract us from being who we are or why we are here on the planet. These material goods cannot and will not help our environment…we must create new thinking to manifest as new people, a world of more caring and compassionate people that are kind to our planet. The shift in our fundamental thoughts, words, and actions towards ourselves and, hence, to others, creates new behaviours and values that are helpful to our environment and to us. As we have a spiritual awakening, our hearts and souls are also changed from being a Me-ist to a We-ist. What an extraordinary life it would be. Does each one of us have to change at the same moment to impact the world around us? No. The teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff (1991) reflect his ideas about what it takes to make real change on our world, “two hundred conscious people, if they existed and if they found it necessary and legitimate, could change the whole life on earth.” Once We-ists begin to change to Me-ists, a new paradigm is formed and then the momentum from such an occurrence will carry us to a new and better world.

The idea behind becoming a We-ist when you are a Me-ist at the present moment is to shift your focus from your Self to others, and your attention can be centred upon a person, animal or the environment. Let’s consider what happens as you focus upon another individual. When you shift your focus, you can help others feel important, self-confident, and worthy of love, success, and happiness. What single word leaves the greatest impression upon others…their name. Every time you meet a new person be sure to remember and use their name, nothing else is sweeter to your ear than your own name. We can help others become more self-confident by following these few steps. If we are supportive and not critical of others, this simple act is conducive to building a person’s self-confidence. When we spend time with someone else, this is when we can reinforce what they do well and not what they don’t do so well. These are ways to refocus upon others and not focus upon your Self.

When you shift your focus upon the creatures that you encounter on a daily basis you help that stray dog or cat by supplying them with a loving home. Millions of people world-wide agree with your decision to have a pet; surely, we all cannot be wrong. Why? You win because research indicates that owning a dog, cat or other animal companion is beneficial psychologically and physiologically (Crain, 2013). First, when you have a pet you are more active and this aids in increasing your heart rate and boosts your energy. Since you are active, you have a greater chance of lowering your chances for obesity, lowering your blood pressure, and your cholesterol too. Second, having a pet increases your feeling of empathy, a positive reaction that is flooded with positive energy as you put their needs before yours, which increases your compassion. Third, your pet needs you to feed, exercise, and water them which increase your empathy. In turn, you feel needed; your dog is never ever judgmental of your actions. Last, petting your dog or cat releases huge doses of positive hormones, serotonin and oxytocin, throughout your system which reduces your cortisol (Niven, 2007). Do you want to become a We-ist? Adopt an animal… today.

When you shift your focus upon the Earth Mother you are helping her survive and therefore enabling your children, grand-children, and great-grand-children an opportunity to live a long healthy life upon our one and only terrestrial home. The focus of this chapter is how we can change from a Me-ist to a We-ist by being kind to our environment. Let’s start with the three R’s:  reduce, reuse, and recycle. It appears that the 3 R’s appeared on the first Earth Day in 1970, within the Environmental Handbook edited by Garrett De Bell and published by Ballentine/Friends of the Earth (www.urbanore.com). The 3 R’s are effective because they are simple imperatives, commands that leave an impression upon our minds to take action to do something positive for our environment. In the process, we benefit emotionally and spiritually from our selfless actions to save the world from pollution.

First, according to Rob at the Green Guide for Everyday Living, reduce “…is dubbed as the mother of all 3 R’s and it should be the first rule to consider when making any task at home.” For example, it is important to work upon reducing energy, materials, and electronic gadgets where you live. Making these simple choices to reduce the waste and consumption in your home is a big step to caring for the Earth and taking the focus off of you and onto something bigger and more important than yourself.

Next, pay particular attention to what you buy and why you buy it; this prudent decision helps our environment. It is easy to say reduce buying clothes, mobile phones, jewellery, shoes and so forth for many of us; however, this attitude swims directly against the current of our modern-day consumer driven world. The government measures economic success by how much we spend. The neighbourhood gauges you on the size of your house, the make of your car, and the price of your toys. The media, in its many forms, pushes the idea that more is better and you are worth more because you have more. This is not true wealth and happiness in life; it is spiritual and emotional poverty that occurs when you face unbridled shopping. What can you do? If you have a problem, acknowledge that you have the problem; don’t deny it exists. Many of us have real problems and issues when it comes to being able to reduce what we buy. The problem is maybe that you are a shopaholic; but don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed of this condition because you’re not alone…far from it. The well-known New York psychologist, Dr. April Lane Benson, estimates that over 18 million Americans are shopaholics. It’s a staggering number of people who suffer from this dilemma, and this is why Dr. Benson created Shopaholicnomore.com. If you think that you or a loved one has a shopping or spending issue, you can visit the site and download their free self-assessment questionnaire to discover if there is a reason for concern as well as what to do about it. This site and its useful information could change your life forever.

If you work on the inside, the outside will take care of itself

Should we buy first and then find the money to meet our obligations?

In this modern world of consumerism and self-development, we are often led to believe that we should first buy expensive automobiles, costly designer watches, or rare collectibles before we even have the money or the plan to pay for them.

Can you feel worthy with more new gadgets and goods?

The rationale is that once you have made the purchase, albeit, on a line of credit or on time, the solution will manifest and you will have the money at your fingertips to pay for these luxuries. And as a result of owning these costly goods, you will then feel worthy and your self-esteem will get a much needed boast. Is this correct thinking?

With all your heart you hope that your bank account catches-up with your bills

When you buy these products before you have the cash to do so, you hope that your mind will catch-up with your new found status and then come-up with a solution. However, all we need to do is look at the present economic environment to see the results of this kind of thinking. Before our eyes we see that businesses are closing, people are losing their homes, bankruptcies are increasing, and marriages are failing…these are the by-products of this reverse thinking.

We sell our souls for material goods but at what cost to our spiritual development?

It seems that we generally get it confused as we strive for the status of having a material possession at the cost of neglecting our spiritual development. Still, what is happening on the inside determines our results on the outside.  In this world which maintains order and harmony as a result of the Natural Laws, it would seem logical to do just the opposite to achieve your desires. Instead of buying the goods first and hoping for a means to pay for them, invest in yourself first and your connection with your spiritual Self will manifest all that you desire in life.

Connection with our spiritual side manifests the guidance we need to meet our wishes and desires

When you invest in self-development books, tapes, and seminars you have the means to connect with your spiritual Self which will provide the guidance to manifest your physical wants. As you follow your inner world to achieve your goals in the outer world, this kind of thinking cannot result in bankruptcies, evictions, and divorces. This is because you are in control of your destiny and not under the control of banks, bosses, and others.

Express your deep, heartfelt gratitude to the Source for each goal you achieve

Of course, when you do achieve the physical manifestations of the thoughts you hold within your spiritual world, celebrate and express gratitude to the Source for your achievement. You have earned it and should feel that sense of accomplishment in the journey and the goal.

Natural Laws are permanent; material goods are ephemeral; which one are you investing in?

The latest fashions and status symbols come and go quickly in this day and age. What’s hot today ain’t hot tomorrow. Do not stake your future on the ephemeral nature of material goods, rather, place your faith in the permanence of the Natural Laws. When you develop your inner world, the outer world will be much more gratifying.

We are creators within the universe

This new era of spirituality is growing at an alarming rate. Why? It’s because we are finally beginning to comprehend our role as creator and not just a participant within the magnitude of the universe.  Running parallel to this moment of enlightenment, we have also witnessed the meltdown of many major corporations and Wall Street.

Our material goods can be taken away from us in an instant

It is frightening to think that our wealth can be taken away without notice. The fruits of our labor snatched away like candy from a baby. However, in spite of this scenario we can, should, and will succeed. As in any economic meltdown, they are those that will succeed and there are those that will fail. As result, we need to think and do things differently to come out successful in the situation we find ourselves in.

A Winning Equation in Life

The key to success in these tumultuous times is a plan. Just as you developed strategies to succeed within your formal studies, there is also a Winning Equation in Life. With awareness and application of the Universal Laws, each one of us can reap the benefits knowing that success can be narrowed down to an exact science like mathematics or physics.

The Complexity of Success can be simplified, understood, and thus, overcome by an equation

The complexity of success can be set in the following equation:

Goals + Faith + Intuition + Moment + Gratitude = SUCCESS

BIG GOALS

You must decide upon what you want and be sure to make your goals BIG. Now, BIG means different things to different people, however, you cannot succeed in a BIG way if you don’t have this thought in your mind. And it takes the same amount of energy to decide upon large goals as it does to decide upon small goals. It is vitally important not to let your past influence your future goals. This thought will shackle you to your present and drive your desires away from you. And be sure to share your decision with a person or persons who can support you fully.

FAITH:100%

When you have 100% faith in the Source and yourself, you will achieve those goals you originally set. Faith is an amazing ally: fear, anxiety, doubt, and other negative emotions are driven away from you when faith permeates your soul.

INTUITION

In this scientific age, we all too often turn away from that voice within, the voice of the Source which is meant to guide us and give us strength. We need to heed our intuition knowing that we are never given a goal unless we have also been given a plan to achieve it. Be sure to have those quiet moments and listen to your intuitive soul to receive your sacred guidance.

THE MOMENT

We also need to enjoy the moment: enjoy it as a child with great amazement and wonderment in your connection with the Source. Be sure to use all of your senses when you think about the present moment; this will provide a greater sense of amazement and wonderment. Even though you do not have what you want in hand, still, you must to act at this very moment as though it is already received.

GRATITUDE

Express your gratitude daily to receive more of the good you deserve from the Source…this is the Law. When you look at life and success as a formula, you must win and receive what you set your mind on.

Your immediate and long-term success depends upon your desire, emotion, and action.

How do you define success?

Success in life can mean a number of things to different people. Some chase fame, many want material goods, while others pursue the peace and harmony that results from spiritual attainment. Nevertheless, no matter how diverse success is defined, there are three essential ingredients necessary for a life of personal achievement. Desire, emotion, and action are powerful forces that can lead a person to achieve the ultimate success in their life.

Desire, a deep burning desire for your goal can help you achieve the seemingly unachievable.

In Napoleon Hill’s writing’s, he clearly believed that desire was critical for achieving success. However, it must be a burning desire, a desire for fulfillment that takes over your entire life and you simply must reach the goal desired in your mind in spite of any and all obstacles.

Belief in achieving your goal is not enough to achieve your goal.

Although people may believe they have an intense desire for their goal, they never realize what they’re after. They let excuses get in their way. They don’t have the money needed to start a new business or they don’t possess the knowledge or the time just isn’t right. They allow their present circumstances to rob them of their desire.

Excuses can dose your burning desire to reach your goal.

When you feel that your burning desire is waning, it is crucial to rekindle the flame and remain focused upon the end goal, and not allow excuses to take away your need for success.

The intensity of your emotions helps you achieve what you desire most in this life.

The second part of the equation is having emotions for the goal you want to achieve. The intensity of your emotions helps you get around, over, or under the obstacles that can be put between you and your goal. Positive emotions of faith, abundance, enthusiasm, expectancy, passion, and gratitude change your psychological and physiological Self.

Your outer world mirrors your inner world.

Just think when you’re sad: your outside mirrors your inside since there’s no hiding your true Self. Now, think when you’re happy: you feel good on the inside and your outer Self reflects that good feeling as you walk tall and confident. You are harmonious with the universe and your goal.

Harmony between your goals and your thoughts manifests your goals.

In turn, being in harmony with the Natural Laws opens up the floodgates of the universe to bring together the people, the circumstances, and the right moment for your personal success. So, look in that mirror and get those emotions out, they’re crucial for personal success.

Action is often missed; you cannot achieve your goals through inaction.

Even though one’s desires and emotions are in harmony, a goal can never be accomplished unless you take action. Actions produce results that bring success. It’s clear that the little things done consistently bring about huge results over time.

Plan what action you will take daily to reach your goal.

In order to achieve your goals, plan daily and be sure to do the most important thing needed on a daily basis to succeed. It’s wise to start your day off on a positive note and write down what you need to do that day to get closer to your dreams.

Manifest your goals through desire, emotion, and action…it’s the Law.

No matter how you look at life, a healthy dose of desire, emotion, and action will result in the manifestations of your goals.

Where do we find truth in this day and age?

3. Truth is within, do not look elsewhere.

(Osho’s Third New Commandment)

We are truth

Each of us is the physical manifestation of a compassionate, loving Source who is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end, the start and the finish. As such, we are the embodiment of truth…we are created from truth and we retain the truth deep within. Our truth is not seen on the outside by others, but it is felt on the inside by each of us. And it is our truth and ours alone that helps us to live a joyful and meaningful life.

Quiet the noise

header20Our modern technological age has many distractions; television, computers, and mobiles all get in line to take a piece out of us, as we surrender one piece at a time these cannot be replaced unless we endure a great deal of angst and difficulty. Still, we must find truth, our truth even though we face a myriad of roadblocks that blind us from the truth. How do we find truth? We must quiet the noise that threatens to smother us, takes away truth, forms barriers between us and what we know is the truth for us. The best way to turn down the white noise of modernity and make it inaudible is to meditate on a regular basis. As we face our self in quiet solitude, we face our truth, and as we face our truth we face the truth that has been given freely and lovingly by the Source.

Truth has no physical shape

Do not look at an expensive watch for truth; do not look at a costly automobile for truth; and do not look at a spacious mansion for truth…you will be disappointed if you think these material goods will reveal the truth to you. If perchance, you do believe that these hold the truth that you are seeking, it is only an illusion, one that is able to fool your five worldly senses but one that cannot fool your unworldly senses.

Be selfish and pursue truth

Some of us may think that it is selfish to pursue truth, this idea is as far from the truth as it possibly can be. When we pursue truth we are fulfilling our love for and the obligation to the Source to be the best we can be. This is not being selfish…this is being selfless. Untainted by the perils of modern day living, we end up at our original place of being, a hallowed place that is formed by the positive energy emitted by the light and the love of our Creator.

Truth is to be lived, each moment at a time

We live truth, we are truth in our present physical manifestation…we cannot create it…we cannot see it…we cannot buy it…we can only live it, and we live it when we close our eyes and listen to the truth that we hold within.
